Working with our client in South Africa, McQuaid Engineering has successfully completed, shipped, and installed one of our heavy duty RB110 rock breaker boom systems throughout the countries lockdown phases.

The project consisted of replacing a smaller rock breaker boom, with a much larger and more heavy duty boom system at the ROM tip at Gansberg zinc mine. Working closely with the team on the ground, McQuaid Engineers considered the boom systems reach, application, coverage, structure, and proximity to the crusher. As standard practice our experienced engineering team not only ensure that customers receive the best solution for their needs, they also make sure that the right equipment is positioned in the right place for optimum safety, reliability, durability and productivity.

Taking in the parameters of the job, it was determined that our RB110 boom was the best system for the job. The RB110 has a max nominal horizontal reach of 10 meters, a vertical reach of 9 meters and weighs in at 11,500kg. This heavy duty boom system is suitable for permanent breaking under strenuous conditions.

On site the old boom system was removed and the new system complete with hydraulic power pack and piping was installed and commissioned within one week. The benefits of the new system not only mean that long-term productivity is significantly improved, but the operator is no longer confined to a cabin, they can safely utilize a remote control from up to 100meters distance anywhere around the machine.

Gamsberg is located about 30km from Black Mountain Mining in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Gamsberg currently produces 400,000 tonnes of ore per month. While the operational design is for 333,333 tonnes of ore per month, they are currently exceeding production to make up for the shortfall experienced early in 2019. A critical feature of Gamsberg’s development is its approach to biodiversity. The Project is being developed in the ecologically sensitive Succulent Karoo Biome, a designated biodiversity “hotspot” and one of just 35 “biodiversity hotspots” in the world. The project team is working in close partnership with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s oldest and largest environmental organisation and in compliance with the Vedanta Sustainable Development Framework to ensure effective implementation of the agreement.
